In January 2008, Gateshead Council appointed Outside Consultants to produce a Housing Strategy for Young People backed up by a comprehensive study of the needs and aspirations of young people in the Borough. The study aimed to determine the needs and aspirations of young people for accessible, good quality accommodation and related services and subsequently support the development of appropriate housing options.

The study involved a sample survey of 1,000 young people, focus groups with providers and young people, in-depth stakeholder interviews and a baseline review of information.

• rural housing needs and parish housing needs surveys
• housing and care needs of older people
• the future of social housing demand
• review and evaluation of the lettings policies
• analysis of housing registers
• housing pathways and experiences of women fleeing domestic violence
• housing & substance misuse strategy
